Goals

Our Advisory Goals

The Goal of Our Advisory outcome is student centered. Therefore, we must be intentional with our approach. Activities can quickly turn into misinterpreted games when the approach is not focused or gets too silly. We have the same goals as we have being content teachers. Advisory is not an add-on to our jobs it is part of our being teachers. We are forging a culture and installing new patterns of behavior through our advisories that will enhance our content areas. As long as we are all in it together and each committed to the same framework and rules we will be successful.
We are going to hold our students and ourselves to a high level of commitment to advisory, but in return we will have fun, give our students a voice, and together we will learn. We are adding value to our middle school with Our Advisory.
The Association for Middle Level Education formally known as National Middle School Association has outlined five general goals they feel a good advisory program can achieve. They are:
·         Promote student teacher relationships
·         Address general self-esteem and competence beliefs
·         Provide social exchange and peer recognition in a safe environment
·         Link parents to school
·         Mediate between academic and social concerns.

Chapter 6 Wormelli: Accountability and High Standards.

Successful Middle School Teacher Traits:

1. Put students first. We must know our students well, before we can teach them well.

2. Keep up with the latest developments in our field.

3. Provide successful instruction which addresses students' developmental and intellectual needs and is the highest form of classroom management. Middle school is a place to explore, investigate, dramatize, and relate.

4. Think unconventionally.

5. Collaborate regularly with colleagues. Collective wisdom solves most problems.
