Mapping It Out

Advisory Plans
8/25/14 – 2/29/14

Google Maps: Getting to Where You Want to Be

Monday Morning:

-         Take attendance

-          Bring class down to the Lower School Gym for Monday Morning Meeting

Monday Flex Block:

-         Check planners

o   Look for signatures

o   Look to see that the subjects are written in

-         Check binders

Tuesday Morning:

-         Show Kid President Pep talk from YOUTUBE. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-gQLqv9f4o

-         Introduce Map concept

o   Pull a Google Map up on your TV or Projector

o   Point out the Blue and Green dots. Have students start brain storming how a map is a lot like middle school

§  There are multiple paths to get to the end

§  There are turns and twists

§  There are rules of the road to follow and sometimes detours

Tuesday Flex Block:

-         Tape Maps game- tape, a table, straws, pompoms

o     Three kids at a time come up to the table and start at the same end with their pompom on their own tape line

o     When the teacher says go they race to blow their pompom along the tape line to the finish

o     If the pompom falls off the table they need to start over. If they fall off course they need to get back on.

-         Find the 2 Tape Maps Masters in your advisory. They will compete in a bigger Map off on Thursday during House Flex.

Wednesday Morning:

-         If you didn’t show the video show it now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ThmP_XyC2Y

-         Review game from yesterday.

o   Just like GoogleMap keeps you on course, groups need guiding principles to keep them on course.

o   Sometimes things happen on the road that make travelling harder or easier; likewise, there are things that people can do that make reaching our goals (remember what’s in your paper bags) harder or easier.

o   So if we want to reach our June destination feeling _______________, what “roads” to do we need to take?  What will help us get there?

o   Examples:      acceptance of our differences                    respect

                                                participation                                                 confidentiality

                                                showing up on time                                                kindness

Ask your advisees to work together to create a list – their own “rules of the road.”  Find a way that works best for your group – if you all work well together (participation high), then work as a large group; but if some members monopolize the process, then have group split up into pairs or trios and create a list of guiding principles; after each group presents their ideas, debate and decision-making can take place to adopt the rules.

Wednesday Flex Block:

-         Office Hours

o   Do homework

o   Read a book

o   Ask for help

Thursday Morning:

-         Complete the process (if needed) of adopting Rules of the Road.  Have these written out (markers, poster board, glitter) and posted in your advisory room.

-         Submit your Map Masters representatives by email to Christin for our afternoon game.

-         Tell class to just meet you in the Lower School Gym for Flex block today.

Thursday Flex Block:

Friday Morning:

-         Flag Ceremony

-         Meet back in advisory BEFORE heading off to first class no matter what time it is.

o   Your entire advisory should come back to your advisory class room and await dismissal from you

o   Clean up the room, grab their belongings, head off to class.
