Powering Down

Powering Down

This activity brings to light the amount of time the current generation actually spends “plugged in” to computers, phones, video games and TV. Without thinking about it we can end up spending countless hours a week attached to our devices.

Have students hypothesize about their own “plugged in” trends and share.

Take a look at this site http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/State-of-the-Media-2011-TV-Upfronts.pdf  and print some interesting charts or pieces of information, show them on computers, or project it for your students. Then lead them in discussion of the trends in TV watching.

In journals have students track their “plugged in” time over the next week each day.

In the following advisory class discuss the class trends.

1.       On which days did you spend the most time in front of a screen? Why more on those days than others?

2.       How did your daily estimate compare to your actual daily average?

3.       What is the role of screens in your life?

4.       Why is it important to limit your screen time

5.       Brainstorm five activities you enjoy doing that could replace screen time

6.       Why is screen time good/bad?
